Chrome Olympus OM-1 w/ 50/1.8 MIJ Zuiko Lens in Excellent Condition
The OM-1 started the shrinking SLR revolution in 1972. Weighing in at up to 35% less than the competition, yet retaining full capability and reliability (the shutter was rated for 100,000 exposures, the same as the Nikon F & F2). While not offering interchangeable finders like the Nikons, the OM-1 was also the first SLR to feature user-interchangeable focusing screens through the lens mount with a tiny pair of tweezers. 14 different screens were eventually available for virtually any requirement. Motor drive capability was added in 1974 with performance up to five frames per second. Olympus also developed an extensive macrophotography system for the OM series. The OM-1 was also the only OM to offer mirror lock up for maximum vibration reduction for macro and long-exposure photography. This particular example is late-production (mid-1978) and is in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition. A common problem with many OM-1s is de-silvering of the pentaprism due to the degradation of foam used for cushioning it. Olympus stopped doing this during the later stages of OM-1 production. This camera happens to be one of the non-foamed copies and so the prism is in immaculate condition with no danger of future corrosion by decomposing foam. The viewfinder is clear and bright, with just a few tiny dust specks. It has had a Schottky diode added to the metering circuit to allow the use of a modern 1.55V SR44/357 battery versus the obsolete mercury 1.35V 625 cell that was originally used. This modification ensures the accuracy of the meter with the higher voltage silver oxide cell. The light seals have been replaced and the camera film-tested as always. Exposures were bang-on. The late-version 50/1.8 Zuiko lens (the best optical quality of all the 50/1.8 Zuikos) is in excellent optical, mechanical, and cosmetic condition as well, with minor internal dust. Focus is smooth and the aperture is clean and snappy. A 49mm front lens cap and a new Maxell SR44 with an o-ring to center it in the battery chamber are included.
